About RATS

We are pleased to announce a RATS training session entitled "Getting the Most Out of Version 6" to be held this November, in London, U.K.. As the title suggests, the sessions will coincide with the release of Version 6 of RATS, and will focus on making use of the new capabilities of Version 6.

This will be a two-day session, with different topics to be covered on each day. Participants can register for either day, or for both days. See the Course Outline for details on what will be covered on each day.

Computers will be available throughout the course so that you can gain hands-on experience with the program. Demo versions of Version 6 will be provided for any attendees who do not already have Version 6. These will be full-featured versions of the software that will only function for a limited period of time.

Who should attend - This is a two-day workshop intended for those already familiar with RATS. We will discuss the major improvements included in RATS v6 and show you how to make the best use of them

The Principal Lecturer - The course will be taught by Tom Doan, the owner of Estima, and primary developer of the RATS software

Cost - The cost of the course are:

1st participant
Both days £ 475 + VAT = £ 546.25
2nd+ participant Both days £ 425 + VAT = £ 488.75

Course Outline

The first day is devoted primarily to the more general programming features of RATS. This will help you write more flexible procedures and functions and improve the efficiency of repetitive calculations. The second day describes the higher level econometric and statistical instructions, focusing mainly on the new GARCH instruction and the improvements to DLM for state-space models. You can register for Day 1, Day 2 or both.

Day 1 - Programming

  • Using the new FUNCTION definitions
  • The FIXED instruction and ways to write better procedures
  • GSET and the use of SERIES of matrices
  • REPORT for user-definable reports
  • DBOX for user-defined dialog boxes
  • Graphics improvements, including GCONTOUR for contour graphs
  • Overview of new functions, and focused discussion of the most important ones
  • General improvements to the optimization functions
  • Applications to Monte Carlo methods, bootstrapping and simulations

Day 2 – Econometrics

  • GARCH instruction for univariate and multivariate GARCH models
  • DLM, improvements allowing for diffuse initial states and regression estimation with error processes given by state-space models.
  • DDV for discrete dependent variables (binary and polytomous choice), count data
  • LDV for limited dependent variables (various censoring and truncation estimators)
  • RLS for recursive least squares
  • PREG, improved to include instrumental variables, first difference estimation, other improvements for panel data handling
